On 27th August, 2013 two brothers from the Jat community killed a Muslim man, allegedly for ‘eve-teasing’ their sister in the village of Kawal in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. The brothers were immediately lynched by a Muslim mob and tempers ran high for the next few days.
43 people from both the communities lost their lives in the violence that ensued, fuelled by rumours, provocative speeches and fake videos shared on social media.
An estimated 40,000 people, mostly Muslims, have been displaced and sought shelter in refugee camps.
